Before arriving at Godwin High School, J. David Clatterbuck taught vocal music at Pocahontas Middle School in the Henrico County Public School from 2002-2012. He is also organist and the Director of Music at Laurel Presbyterian Church in Glen Allen, Virginia.
Clatterbuck has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bridgewater College and a Master of Music Education from Shenandoah Conservatory of Music. He has also pursued post-graduate studies at Westminster Choir College. He began his vocal teaching career in 1983 at Antietam Jr. High School in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania then returned to Virginia to teach choral music at Waynesboro High School and Kate Collins Middle School, where he had done his student teaching. He taught successfully at Waynesboro for fifteen years, teaching over two hundred vocal music students each year!
Looking for a change in scenery and a new challenge, Clatterbuck relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he accepted the position of Music Associate at First Presbyterian Church. While there, he directed seven choirs ranging from pre-kindergarten children through high school students. His choirs went on four major concert tours including to The British Isles, The Carolinas, California, and Colorado. They also produced a major musical each year. The productions included “Grease”, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, and “Hello, Dolly”!
Missing Virginia and teaching public school, Clatterbuck moved to Richmond in 2002 and began work at Pocahontas Middle School. While at Pocahontas, his chorus was named “Grand Champion” at the Busch Gardens Choral Festival ten years in a row! His choruses also consistently received first place trophies and numerous other awards. Mr. Clatterbuck was selected by his faculty at Pocahontas Middle School as “Teacher of the Year” for 2006-2007. He was also selected by his music colleagues as Henrico County’s “Music Educator of the Year” for 2007!
Mr. Clatterbuck has been clinician, adjudicator, and accompanist at numerous choral events throughout the state of Virginia and has an extensive background in musical theatre in Virginia and Florida, both as actor, musical director and artistic director. He has participated in more than seventy-five musical productions. Favorite shows in which he has performed include “Sweeney Todd”, “A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum”, “Little Shop of Horrors”, and “Forever Plaid”.
Mr. Clatterbuck enjoys being a Godwin Eagle and making music with all of the talented choral ensembles.
